What I should have said

Shy (adj): Drawing back from contact or familiarity with others

I can run through the entire scene in my head before the actual event. I can think of what I would say, what I would do, how I would act, and I would tell myself over and over again that I can do it. I can manage to be myself and not screw it up. But alas, I cannot. When presented with an opportunity all I can manage is sitting there thinking about what I should say, but can't bring myself to say it. Why do I have to be so shy?

Why, when presented with an opportunity do I choke? Why do I sit there like an idiot wondering what you're thinking? Why do I do this to myself? Why can't I just say what I want instead of kicking myself later for what I should have said? For instance, what I should have said was that I like being in your presence, even if we're sitting there not saying a word to each other. What I should have said is that I like your laugh and can't help but smile when I see you smile. What I should have said is that I'm completely smitten and can't wait to see you again.

But, then again, that's what I should have said.

What's up with that?

You're walking down the sidewalk to class or work or wherever you walk to and you pass someone you know. You smile or nod your head to acknowledge them and they say, "What's up?"

Now, I cannot criticize the phrase, "What's up?" because I myself use it from time to time. In fact, I think it's a nice greeting to someone. When I am greeted with "What's up?" and I'm in a good mood I'll even reply, "The sky!" or something of equal nonesense. But I must admit that my usual reply is "not much," as even if I'm working on homework or watching t.v. my usual attitude is that I'm bored out of my mind and don't consider what I'm doing very exciting.

So I am completely for using the phrase "What's up?" as a greeting on aol instant messenger or with someone you know you're going to stay and have a conversation with. That way when they ask, "What's up?" you can actually take the time to answer and explain why something is up or even why it's not. However, when you pass someone that you are merely acknowledging and are not actually going to stop and talk to (not that they don't want to talk to you, but they've probably got somewhere to go too) I am at a loss of how to reply to "What's up?"

The way I see it, "What's up?" has become more of a greeting like "hello" or "Good morning." It is not actually inquiring to how someone is or what's going on with them. That would be like asking, "What are you doing today?" as you pass someone. You know you're not going to change directions and chase after them just to answer their question. So what is the appropriate reply if someone you're passing says, "What's up?"

Do I say, "Not much. You?" and hope that we're both walking slow enough to get all this out before we completely pass each other?

Do I just say, "Hello" as if they were merely greeting me and not inquiring to how I was?

Do I not say anything and just nod or smile to let them know that I heard them and am not ignoring them?

What am I supposed to do?!

Katherine

P.S. If I am passing you and I say, "What's up?" I am sorry to put you in the same confusing predicament that I am in now. Heehee.

What is wrong with me?

I have this major problem that I just can't seem to bring myself to do any schoolwork when I go home for the weekend. I realize that this is also a difficult activity when I'm here at college as well, but when I'm home it is even more difficult. I KNOW I need to do the schoolwork, I PLAN on doing the schoolwork. I even take an entire bookbag full of stuff to work on. But do I ever actually get even half as much work done as I know I should?! NO! What is wrong with me. Writing papers is NOT hard at all. In fact, compared to the stuff that other college students I know do, writing measely one page papers should not be hard at all. But for some reason when I try to write the only thing that comes out is nonsense like this...

"I really don’t want to do this assignment. This assignment blows the big one. I’d rather be sleeping than doing this assignment. However, I cannot sleep instead of do this assignment because I need to study for my huge Greek Civilization test. But I can’t study for my Greek Civilization test until I get this stupid homework done. I also can’t enjoy my weekend unless I know I got something productive done. Therefore, I must get this homework done. I hate school!!!!!!!!!!!!"

So I ask you this...WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!?!?!

That is all. Peace out!

Singing in the Rain!

I can honestly say that I had an awesome night. Mallory, Marissa, Mac, and I (I'm thinking I would fit in with the people I hang out with here if I changed my name to something that starts with an M) walked uptown to see the movie Pink Panther. I've seen the originals, and this new one wasn't too horrible. Of course, it's hard to top Peter Sellers, Steve Martin is definitely a wise choice for the role of Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau.

After the movie we walked outside and found that it was POURING rain, and none of us had umbrellas. So the guy who works at the theatre offered us some umbrellas that people had left there. Apparently that happened often. We were going to catch a bus back, but were hungry. So we stopped at the Pita Pit (I didn't even know what a Pita was before tonight, by the way). We watched the rain and pretty lightning while the song "I Can see clearly now the rain is gone" played in the background. Haha. Now the movie and food was great and all, the best part of the night was walking home in the pouring rain. We decided to bear it and make the approx. 15 minute walk back to our hall. So we decided, and so we did. It was actually quite fun. I sang in the rain, I twirled in the rain, and even jumped in a few puddles.

By the time we got back we were COMPLETELY drenched. Especially Mac, who didn't have a sweatshirt with a hood. Let's just say the rain was dripping into his eyes. He looked like he just got out of the shower...well, actually he did, a rainshower. Heehee. I must say there are very few things as uncomfortable as walking upstairs and changing out of wet, cold, clothes. Oh well, totally worth it for the experience. And now I must go do my homework...so I can get classes over with tomorrow and head home for a three day weekend! Yay!

Enjoy the litte moments!

Ode to Valentine's Day

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!

Today is probably the most criticized holiday because people claim that it was invented by the Candy and Card companies. I'm not saying I believe that, but I'm not saying it's false. All I know is I love Valentine's Day and I'm going to share my joy with all you wonderful people!

(I would like to take this time to inform you that I am listening to a mix of songs, all with the word, "love" in the title in honor of Valentine's Day.)

First of all, I hope that everyone has a wonderful Valentine's Day because it truly is a day for everyone. I myself have never had a boyfriend on Valentine's day and I still enjoy it. It doesn't matter if you have a significant other because Valentine's Day is about love! Love for family, love for friends, love for yourself, even love for your pets! (Love you, Anna!)

I think my love of Valentine's Day began with my family's Valentine party. For as long as I can remember, on Valentine's Day (or near since we've gotten so busy) my mom makes a heart shaped cake and we have a family dinner. Then after dinner my parents give us kids valentine gifts, nothing huge. But we can always expect a lottery ticket! So everyone should have a happy valentine's day, whether you're celebrating with family, friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, or etc.

Favorite Valentine's Day Memories
1. In Fourth grade we had a contest in Mrs. Pollard's room. Everyone was to make a Valentine box/bag or something and she would choose a winner. My mom helped me make an awesome box and I won first place!
2. I think it was in fifth grade that I had a crush on Trevor Scott. He gave me a valentine, well...he gave one to everyone in the class...but it made me happy anyway (I still have it somewhere because I save so much stuff you wouldn't even imagine...).
3. My cousin got married on Valentine's Day. It was the most precious wedding ever with hearts everywhere and etc. That just made it so much more special.
4. Marissa and I used to have this special Valentine's Day tape of shows we used to watch when little. It's the Valentine episodes of Family Circus, Adventures in Wonderland, the Elephant Show, The Flintstones, and much more. We used to watch it every Valentine's Day.

My mom showed me this site not too long ago and I found it very interesting and fun. It is
50 Yummy and Delicious Chocolate Trivia Questions. You don't have to keep track, but I did. I answered only 20 correctly...but I learned some very good information that may come in handy when I least expect it (like while playing Cranium or something!) You should also check out the other fun stuff at the site. It's a good procrastinator for all you college students!

While walking today...

So I was walking to class today and I saw a squirrel. I know what you're thinking. "There are squirrels everywhere at Miami!" This is very true. There ARE squirrels everywhere here at Miami. They sneak up on you, and scare you when you least expect it. However, this was not just your typical squirrel. Usually they are carrying acorns in their mouths...this one was carrying a paper bag. It was one of those mini brown paper bags that you'd pack a lunch in. It was all rolled up and in this squirrels mouth! So I can only assume that the squirrel was going on vacation...what else could it mean?

As some of you may have noticed it rained today. Well, actually maybe it didn't rain from the location you're reading this from, but it did here. While I was walking today (You may have noticed I do a lot of walking...) I saw two men also walking. One of them was holding a HUGE umbrella. I'm talking fit my entire family under there! Well, maybe not MY entire family because there are 30 grandkids...but you get the point. The man walking next to him did not have an umbrella. Yet the were together talking...Why wouldn't the guy with the big umbrella share...? At the bus stop there were people sharing their umbrellas with strangers...Does the guy without the umbrella have bad body odor or something? Hm....

Also today I received a death in the family. Yes, after four marvelous years together my umbrella is no longer with us. She had a happy life. Always protecting me from getting wet (for the most part), willing to hang out and dry after she did her job. She was always happy and never complained. Umbrella, you will be greatly missed.

Peace out!
